Pathfinder

Pathfinder

Embark on a rich fantasy adventure to solve mysteries and puzzles with Pathfinder, an RPG based on the classic Dungeons & Dragons game. The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game was first published in 2009 by Paizo Publishing, but has since seen revised versions, card games and a range of supporting accessories.

Pathfinder game rules

The Pathfinder game follows tactical tabletop gaming, where you will get to tell heroic stories in a world of monsters, magic and treasures. The core mechanics rely on a simple 3-action system:

  • d20 rolls

Roll the 20-sided die (d20) and identify which number lands face-up.

  • Add modifiers

Add any relevant modifiers such as character bonuses, ability scores and skill proficiency.

  • Run opposed difficulty checks

Once you’ve rolled the dice and added any relevant modifiers to that number, compare that total against the target number set by the game (also known as Difficulty Class). If your total equals or beats this, you’ve succeeded!

Pathfinder game FAQs

How many players is Pathfinder designed for?

The Pathfinder roleplaying game is designed for 4-6 players and one Game Master.

Does the Pathfinder game have an age rating?

Pathfinder doesn’t have an official age rating because players ultimately decide the content. However, the core tabletop game is generally recommended for ages 14+ due to potentially dark themes and complex gaming mechanics.

How long does the average game of Pathfinder last?

A game of Pathfinder usually lasts around 3-5 hours; however, this will vary entirely based on whether you are playing a one-shot adventure, a society scenario or an overarching campaign that can last at least a year.

Do all versions of Pathfinder follow the same rules?

No, not all versions of Pathfinder follow the same rules. The rules will depend on the specific edition of the game you’re playing. Pathfinder 1st Edition is more complex but offers deeper customisation, while the 2nd Edition, for example, is faster-paced and easier to learn, but still offers deep strategy.

Do you score points in Pathfinder?

Not in the traditional sense. Being a roleplaying tabletop game, you don’t score points to win, but they are used in the background during gameplay:

  • Ability points/character creation: Both the 1st and 2nd Editions of Pathfinder let you choose which skills/stats to invest points in when you create your character and level up.
  • Experience points (XP): Earned for winning fights and completing challenges
  • Skill ranks: You earn a set number of skill ranks every time you level up (Pathfinder 1st Edition) or skill increases and feats at specific levels for those playing Pathfinder 2nd Edition
