What Is The UK Games Expo?

What Is The UK Games Expo?

Your Complete Guide to the UK’s Biggest Tabletop Gaming Event

If you're a fan of board games, card games, role-playing games, or anything tabletop-related, then the UK Games Expo (UKGE) is an event you need on your radar.

But what exactly is the UK Games Expo? Why is it such a big deal in the gaming world? Whether you're a curious first-timer or a returning attendee looking for updates, this guide will give you a complete overview of what to expect, including how to plan, what’s on, how to get involved, and which big names, like Asmodee UK, will be showing up.

What is the UK Games Expo?

Every year, tens of thousands of fans descend on the NEC for a weekend packed with games, demos, cosplay, shopping, panels, tournaments, and some truly unforgettable experiences.

When is the UK Games Expo in 2025?

The UK Games Expo will be taking place on Friday, 30 May 2025 – Sunday, 1 June 2025.

Where is the UK Games Expo?

Held annually at the NEC, located on Pendigo Way, Marston Green, Birmingham B40 1NT, this is the UK’s biggest gaming convention, and one of Europe’s largest.

How to Prepare for UK Games Expo

Planning is key to getting the most out of the UK Games Expo. The event is massive, spread across multiple halls at the NEC and even spilling into nearby hotels, like the Hilton Metropole.

It helps to come prepared if you want to experience everything, from game demos to shopping, panels, and tournaments.

UK Games Expo tickets

First, you'll want to secure tickets in advance. Not only does this save you time on the day, but tickets can sometimes sell out for special events or premium experiences. If you plan to attend for more than one day, consider a weekend pass, which offers the best value and flexibility.

Accommodation near the UK Games Expo

Next, consider accommodation. The Hilton is the expo's official hotel and often hosts open gaming areas, special evening events, and more.

Rooms book up quickly, so grabbing one early is a good idea. If the Hilton is full, there are plenty of nearby options, but staying close by adds to the experience.

Getting to the UK Games Expo

Getting to the NEC is straightforward. It’s well connected via rail (Birmingham International Station is right next door), road, and even air travel via Birmingham Airport. Parking is available on-site, but it fills up fast, especially on Saturday.

What to bring with you to the UK Games Expo

Pack smart. Comfortable shoes are a must; you’ll be walking and standing often. Bring a water bottle, some snacks, a bag for any games or goodies you pick up, and maybe even a notebook or phone app to track all the games you want to try.

What happens at the UK Games Expo?

Walking into UKGE feels like stepping into a gamer’s paradise. The halls have demo tables, publisher booths, giant games, cosplay characters, and thousands of excited attendees. There’s truly something for everyone.

Playing board games at the UK Games Expo

You’ll be able to try out hundreds of games, everything from indie prototypes to massive new releases from big publishers.

Volunteers and company staff are on hand to teach you the rules and get you playing within minutes. This is a rare chance to try before you buy, and it’s a great way to discover games you might not have otherwise picked up.

At Asmodee, we constantly have new, exciting releases. Read our guide called ‘The Best New Board Games in 2025’ to discover the exciting new board games due to be released in 2025.

Exhibitors at the UK Games Expo

The sheer variety is one of the most exciting parts of the UK Games Expo.

Big brands like Asmodee UK, 023 Games, Artefact Games, Atikin Games, Birdwood Games, Chip Theory Games, and hundreds more will showcase their latest and greatest games.

Board game merch

Across the exhibition space, you’ll find game accessories, miniatures, paints, books, dice, and plenty of merch. Sections are dedicated to genres like RPGs, family games, and wargames.

Board game accessories are a great way to organise your games. Check out Asmodee’s board game and card game accessories here.

Meet the board game community or join a board game club

Open gaming spaces are scattered throughout the venue, especially in the Hilton. These allow you to play games you’ve just bought or try something from the Board Game Library, which offers a vast collection to borrow from. You can meet other gamers, join pick-up games, or relax between events.

At Asmodee, we have a range of co-operative games, perfect for team play. You can find them here.

Cosplaying as your favourite board game character

Cosplay adds to the atmosphere; many attendees dress up as their favourite characters.

Meet the board game industry professionals

You’ll also find live shows, game design panels, workshops, and interviews with industry professionals.

The UK Games Expo Awards

Another highlight is the UK Games Expo Awards, which showcase the best new games of the year across multiple categories.

One of the most exciting additions this year is the debut of Altered, a brand-new trading card game entering the competitive scene at UKGE. Hosted by Organised Play Events, this is your chance to be part of something fresh from the ground up.

Expect a constructed format, solid prize support, and exclusive promos. Whether learning or deep into the game, it’s a great time to jump in.

Organised Play Events brings strong prize support and structured formats, which are great for anyone looking to compete or have fun in the Star Wars universe.

One Piece Card Game

One Piece fans, you’re in for a treat. UKGE is hosting the official Treasure Cup on Friday, including exclusive prizes and ranking points.

If you miss the main event or just want more, side tournaments will run Saturday and Sunday too.

Star Wars: Shatterpoint

UKGE will once again host the Star Wars: Shatterpoint Grand Tournament. Bring your strike team into objective-based skirmishes with custom prizes, exclusive order cards, and special Shatterpoint dice.

It’s a great mix of strategy and creativity, organised by UKTC and supported by Atomic Mass Games. A must-play for fans of tactical combat.

Star Wars: Legion

This is one of the weekend’s most popular events. The Star Wars: Legion GT spans two days and includes six deep, strategic play rounds across detailed terrain.

With top-tier competition, great prizes, and a welcoming vibe, it’s a highlight for miniature wargamers looking to prove their skills.

Marvel Crisis Protocol

Assemble your dream team of heroes and villains for two days of Marvel mayhem. Saturday features Swiss rounds, and the top 8 move to a Sunday elimination bracket.

Didn’t cut? No problem. You’ll still be matched into new pods so you can keep playing. It’s well-structured and competitive but inclusive for all levels.

Forest Shuffle UK Championship

Prefer board games? Lookout Games is running the official Forest Shuffle UK Championship, using both the base game and the Woodland Edge expansion.

Open to all skill levels, the tournament includes a promo card for participants and exclusive prizes for the winner. With a relaxed yet competitive atmosphere, it’s perfect for board gamers looking to join in the fun.

Volunteering and demonstrating at the UK Games Expo

The UK Games Expo isn’t just about browsing and playing. It’s also built on community.

Every year, hundreds of volunteers help keep the event running smoothly. Volunteering is a fantastic way to meet people, get behind the scenes, and contribute to something special. Volunteers assist with everything from ticketing and guiding guests to helping run games and supporting events. You’ll even get free entry, meals, and an expo t-shirt.

Asmodee has a demonstration team that allows consumers to experience our games first-hand at national retailers, Hobby Game shops, and events. Find out more information about our demonstration team here.

Opportunities for game designers and publishers

If you’re interested in showing off your own game, UK Games Expo offers fantastic opportunities for game designers and publishers. You can book space to demonstrate your prototype, join the Publisher-Designer Speed Dating event, or participate in the Playtest Zone, where attendees try out new and upcoming games and offer feedback.

Board game design workshops and masterclasses

There are also workshops and masterclasses for designers, covering everything from game mechanics to publishing advice. These sessions are a goldmine for aspiring creators looking to break into the industry or refine their work.

A board game convention for the whole community

One of the most impressive things about the UK Games Expo is how community-driven it is.

UK Games Expo family games

There’s a real focus on inclusivity, accessibility, and shared enthusiasm for games. A Family Zone is perfect for younger gamers and parents seeking more age-appropriate content.

UK Games Expo tournaments and contests

Experienced hobbyists can dive deep into competitive tournaments, miniature painting contests, or advanced RPG scenarios.

The UK Games Expo Living History Village

The Living History Village is another gem. It offers a blend of reenactment and hands-on gaming rooted in historical themes. Visitors can chat with reenactors, try period-themed games, and get immersed in interactive exhibits.

Bringing & buying at the UK Games Expo

The Bring & Buy section is a bustling second-hand market where attendees sell and trade pre-loved games. It’s a treasure trove of bargains and rare finds, and an absolute must-visit for collectors or anyone hoping to pick up something unique.
