Fantasy Flight Games have arranged a series of eight open events for X-wing, one of which will be at the UK Games Expo 2016. Of the other seven events, six will be spread across Europe and the last will be based in the United States. In each main Open tournament, players will compete for a multitude of prizes, including the Open winner’s prize: a trip to 2016 Star Wars™ Celebration in England and entry into the 2016 X-Wing Coruscant Invitational to be held there on 15th July. This will replace the national events from Fantasy Flight, historically held at the Expo. The national events will be held by Esdevium later in the year and closer to Fantasy Flight’s Organised Play world schedule.
Fantasy Flight staff will host the winners of the System Open Tournaments for a special, one day invitational event. Each of the eight System Open winners will receive travel, hotel accommodations, and be provided with a badge for Star Wars Celebration. In the case of one or more Open winners being unable to attend, Fantasy Flight Games will choose additional participants for the Coruscant Invitational if necessary.
Each System Open will offer at least one side tournament utilizing the new Hangar Bay format. Each side tournament is 3 rounds of Swiss play, with players earning prizes for each round that they win. Each player will bring two 100-point squadrons. At the beginning of each round, after evaluating their opponent’s two squadrons, each player will secretly select which of their own squadrons they will use for the game, and simultaneously reveal that information. This year’s Hangar Bay events will also feature the Rival Rule, stipulating that each player’s two squadrons must belong to different primary factions.
