Holding On: The Troubled Life of Billy Kerr, Hub Games’ powerful and emotionally challenging game about providing care to a dying man, has been awarded the Spiel of Approval.
Run by board-games review show The Spiel, the Spiel of Approval is awarded to only around a dozen games per year and celebrates titles that promote thoughtful fun and play.
Holding On, which released last year, has drawn widespread critical acclaim for the way in which it tackles emotionally charged issues that are rarely explored in the tabletop medium.
In discussing the game’s worthiness of the Spiel of Approval, The Spiel co-hosts Stephen Conway and Doug Richardson noted that it “stands apart from almost every [other] game in recent memory”.
“The game implores you to stop, reflect and focus on something that in other games might be considered flavour or fluff,” they continued, hailing Holding On for “[showing] the way to a new kind of art and a new kind of play”.
