At the beginning of November, six UK National Champions flew to Minnesota to take part in the Fantasy Flight Games World Championships. The six contestants ventured across with other players from Europe to take part in different championships. The UK champions took part in the following games:

                                                            • Star Wars: X-Wing (Jesper Hills)
                                                            • Star Wars: Imperial Assault (Jonathan Kipps-Bolton)
                                                            • Star Wars: The Card Game (John-Paul Golightly)
                                                            • Warhammer 40,000: Conquest (Varun Khetarpal)
                                                            • Android: Netrunner (Alex White)
                                                            • Game of Thrones 1st Edition (Dave Bamford)

All of our champions played to the best of their abilities. They all gave their best and represented the UK and European communities at the highest level.

Andy Hornby, one of the UK players who flew across on his own dime to take part in the World Championships, fought valiantly to make it to the top 16 for Imperial Assault. Unluckily he drew Paul Heaver, 3 time X-Wing World Champion and current US Imperial Assault champion, for his first match after the cut. After a close game he was knocked out. Our national champion for Imperial Assault, Jonathan Kipps-Bolton, suffered a similar fate against Paul Heaver in the quarter finals.

Congratulations to Dave Bamford for making the top 8 in the A Game of Thrones 1st Edition Joust. Dave was knocked out by the eventual world number 2, Seth Low, in the quarter finals.

Even Sorgjerd, another player from the UK who made his way over to Minnesota via his own means, managed to make it to the semi-finals of the Warhammer 40,000: Conquest World Championship. He was eventually bested by Seth Rosen who progressed to the final round.

Finally, congratulations to the new Warhammer 40,000: Conquest World Champion Varun Khetarpal for his victory over Seth Rosen to take the title. Here’s what the Warhammer 40,000 Conquest 2015 World Champion had to say about Worlds and his win:

“I had a really good time at Worlds, and was particularly impressed by the level of sportsmanship on display. It was great to be part of a community where everyone had the same interests and to see all the different ideas on gameplay from around the world. Winning was pretty surreal and I’m really grateful to Esdevium for giving me the opportunity to compete at such a high level.”

To echo this, all the feedback we’ve heard from the European players has been excellent. Particular praise has been given to the hospitality Fantasy Flight Games provided, the atmosphere over the five days of gaming and the sportsmanship being displayed by all players.

If you’d like to see Varun’s match against Seth, you can watch it here on Fantasy Flight Games’ YouTube channel.
